ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES

Sustainable Forestry Management in the Madre de Dios Region

The project envisages the sustainable use of a forest of 53,000 hectares fully owned by the Comunidad Nativa Bélgica to develop in their favor a wide array of social, and educational sub-projects. The project turns financially sustainable as a result of the sale of carbon certificates (VCS) as of the second year.

The project includes:

1) Sustainable forestry management aspects (certified and of low impact, 0.6 trees per Ha)
2) The sale of Environmental Services derived from avoided deforestation (REDD).

The project is located in the immediate zone of influence of the Southern Transoceanic Highway.  Although this highway will provide of access and timber transactional possibilities of this currently inaccessible area, and it will also permit a series of new economic endeavors that will favor the Regional development, it will  lead to a migrational and population movement that would originate environmental and social problems including a drastic increase in the deforestation and degradation of lands.

The vicious circle of absence of resources, that forbids the Community to keep a sustainable forestry management is broken through the immediate generation of resources via certificates of avoided deforestation (VCS) emission within the REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) scheme, to be afterwards negotiated into the Voluntary Markets of Carbon.

The generated resources are afterwards reinvested through a series of sustainable and social projects into the same Community.

As a result, the Community creates its own capabilities in order to develop activities that would hence generate additional economic and subsistence resources. Together with the strict protection for avoided deforestation of a significant portion of the forest, a small percentage of the forest is earmarked for the production of certified wood (FSC), as the establishment of small business services to the neighboring.

The project takes into account the serious constraints facing the scale of forest management itself and for this reason, balancing the development model applicable to this poor region. Our vision is not designed to force beyond its limits forest management, but to find solutions suitable alternative work together to manage logging for the area and that are environmentally sustainable in space and time.
